Traveling to Mitzpe Ramon
You won’t be disappointed when you travel to Mitzpe Ramon. It is part of the Negev Desert in Israel. As you may be able to guess from the name, it was founded by the Romans in ancient times. Due to the elevation here, you can see the Ramon Crater. The population is very small, at less than 5,000. While there aren’t too many places of accommodation here for travelers, the hotels are nice. There are also several bed and breakfast locations to consider.
History
There isn’t much recorded about the history of Mitzpe Ramon. However, it was a significant area in 1951 for those who were working on building roads. It wasn’t until the early 1960’s when the location started to have some permanent residents.
The development of the roads here also improved the economy around Mitzpe Ramon. People come to this area for a fun day of adventure on the rough terrain. This can include driving four-wheel vehicles over the desert or the mountains. There are hiking trails into the mountains and around the Nabatean ruins.
There are also several factories that have been running here since 2000. This brings people to the area looking for work or for business deals. The Adama Dance School is also a prime attraction here. People from all over Israel try out for the parts offered at this prestigious school. They have regular performances that are always sold out.
Ramon Crater
The main attraction for people to see in Mitzpe Ramon is the Ramon Crater. It isn’t known what created it, but theories involving meteors and volcanoes have been ruled out. The crater accounts for the strong winds that often blow across this desert land. The dirt and dust can make it almost impossible to see, even right in front of you, for long stretches at a time. The temperature is as warm as it is in the desert, but every couple of years some snowfall is recorded here.
